I have been using HR Block for the past five years after I moved to Florida. The other day I received a notice from the IRS (my first and only in forty years) and before I panicked I took the notice into my local HR Block. Darlene Refici in the Northlake Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens, FL office was the finest tax analyst I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She did a magnificent job going over the issues. Instead of my owing the IRS I will be getting a refund! I mentioned this to my neighbor, who has also worked with Darlene for the past few years. I am feeling incredibly fortunate to have met Darlene and will always go to her for my future tax returns. THANK YOU!

The wizard is easy to use. I like it better than TaxAct and TaxHawk. However, I decided to pay a premium for tax SW this year due to some life changes, so I was disappointed to encounter some avoidable issues using the SW. 1) the worst issue was Block’s failure to count my military retirement pay as a deduction on my OH state return (retirement pay is not taxable in OH). Block treated my retirement income as taxable on my OH state return. On the Fed wizard, Block asked if my 1099-R was for military retirement, so the SW should have known. If I would not have noticed the error, I would have paid thousands more in state taxes. 2) In some cases (e.g., state and local taxes) after you complete the wizard it shows a summary page without any information (no amounts claimed nor a statement of completion); makes you think it didn’t save your inputs. 3) asks you to input your NAICS code, but doesn’t provide a list of valid codes; had to google that. 4) No alternate entry form for interest income not reported on a 1099-INT; had to add a 1099-INT that didn’t really exist. 5) chat window covers most of the help screen. 6) after paying and prior to filing, had trouble figuring out how to print the return for review; had to click “Previous taxes” button to print this-years return-not intuitive. 7) could not find a way to leave a review on the Block website.

It is good software but you need to have a section for filing insurance reimbursements when renters trash the place. I know you can just take it off of expenditures but it is an income when it pays for lost days of rent when a contractor is working on the house without renters there.Also have your software automatically do the community property form. If the husband and wife are filing separately, then have the data all filled out in each one then the filer can just print out each one and fill in the blanks, or have the programs talk to each other to fill out the form. it is a pain. Also have a box in there if the property especially a rental, is community property or not. The form does not take that into account.

Okay, I know you have seen the signs outside of H&R Block offices. "You can get $1,000.00 today!". And you, like myself probably said "yeah, right". "Sure ". I mean, it definitely sounds too good to be true. This is in DECEMBER, before taxes are filed. Before the W-2 forms have been issued. I mean, who would believe something like that??! But anyway, one day I had nothing to do so I went to H&R Block and applied for an Emerald card advance. Of course I knew I was just "going through the motions". Because I have thousands of dollars debt in collections and my credit score is abysmal. So, as expected, I did not get a $1,000.00 Emerald card advance. But I got close to it! VERY CLOSE!! I was, quite literally, SHOCKED. Tell you something else. The H&R Block Emerald Card is the best debit card out. No transaction fees. None. Period. And last year I went to Jackson Hewitt to get my taxes done. They filled incorrectly and the I.R.S. refused to accept my e-file. I went to H&R Block the same day. Not only did I.R.S. accept my return when H&R Block filed it, but I also got a refund over $5,000.00! Look, if you go ANYWHERE besides H&R Block to get your taxes done? You will be making a BIG mistake!
